Alex Golesh and Auburn were looking for that marquee win in his first season as the coach of the Tigers, and they got it on Saturday night. After trailing No. 1 Georgia 14-0 early in the game, the Tigers battled back and won a thrilling 27-24 game on a last-second field goal.
Things couldn’t have started much worse for Auburn, but the Tigers did a good job of keeping their composure. After that, Golesh said the team did a really good job the rest of the way of capitalizing on opportunities.
“You have a certain number of opportunities, and you know when you’re going to get your next one,” Alex Golesh said. “You think about it as a series of 6-to-8 second snaps. In 6-to-8-second, 1-on-1 battles, if you can play more violent, tougher, and more detailed than the guy across from you one play at a time, you will get the result that you want.
It was a very emotional game for Golesh, and he couldn’t hide them after the game while celebrating with his team and son on the field.
For the Tigers, they have been looking for a win like this for a long time. They had had some heartbreaking losses in the last few seasons and needed to get a win against an elite program like that to show they’re trending towards contention.
It figures to be an electric atmosphere next week at Auburn, as the Tigers host another big-time SEC team in LSU.
