Alex Golesh explains why Auburn is ‘lightyears’ ahead of his Year 1 at Tennessee, USF

Alex Golesh has been a first-year coach at other schools before, and he has a good idea of where a program is in terms of being able to compete. Auburn has been looking to get back to competing in the SEC for quite some time, and the Tigers’ fans are hoping that Golesh will be able to get them there. Having seen what a tough situation is, Golesh told reporters on Monday that Auburn is in a great spot to get the offense rolling.
“We are light-years ahead of where we were in Year 1 at the last two places (USF and Tennessee as OC), primarily because of the quarterback knowing the system,” Golesh said. “We’re not starting at square one.”

Under Hugh Freeze, the struggles for Auburn were on the offensive side of the ball. From inconsistent quarterback play to confusion on who was calling plays, the Tigers could never figure it out on the offensive side of the ball.
At USF, his offenses were explosive, with quarterback Byrum Brown being a huge reason why. He is now the quarterback at Auburn, and is coming off a season where he threw for 3,158 yards and 28 touchdowns. He also added another 1,008 yards and 14 touchdowns, and is the type of dual-threat quarterback that can put a lot of pressure on opposing defenses.
Golesh was able to get the offense running at both of his previous stops, and if he can have the same success in 2026, the Tigers could be a darkhorse in the SEC.
