New Auburn coach Alex Golesh saw the setup question coming, but that didn’t stop him from adroitly answering it Monday during his introductory press conference.

The question – do you like to play golf? – was a veiled reference to the affinity former Tigers coach Hugh Freeze had for the sport. And Golesh didn’t miss a beat with his reply.

“That is a setup question. I’ve been here long enough to know that,” Golesh said with a subtle nod. “My little man Barrett loves golf. (Daughter) Corbin used to, and now she is super into cheerleading and flag football so she just does it for a hobby. And my wife (Alexis) is an elite golfer.

“I like football more than golf. And I’m terrible.”

Freeze’s reported frequent trips to the golf course became an issue with Auburn fans over the last year of his tenure. Freeze was fired Nov. 2 after Auburn lost at home to Kentucky 10-3.

Golesh went 23-15 in 3 seasons at South Florida – including a 9-3 mark in 2025 that saw the Bulls ranked for several weeks in the AP Top 25. He was also linked to the Arkansas opening before being hired Sunday by Auburn.
