The Arkansas football program is mourning the loss of Bill Burnett, who was one of the Razorbacks’ best-ever running backs.

In a social media post, Arkansas noted that Burnett still holds the program record for total touchdowns (49) and rushing touchdowns (46) in a career.

Burnett’s 19 rushing touchdowns in 1969 are the second-most in program history behind Alex Collins’ 20 in 2015. Burnett also rushed for 15 scores in 1968, making him the only Razorback ever to rush for 15+ touchdowns in multiple seasons.

Burnett also set the FBS record for most consecutive games with a rushing touchdown (23) during his college career. His record stood for more than 50 years until Iowa State’s Breece Hall broke it in 2021.

According to Whole Hog Sports, Burnett passed away on Saturday in Fayetteville. His off-the-field legacy includes helping to lead the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in the state of Arkansas. Per Whole Hog Sports, Burnett served as the state’s director from 1972-1980 and the Northwest Arkansas area director from 2008-2018.

Burnett was 78 years old.
