New Florida State quarterback Ashton Daniels caused quite the unintentional stir on social media during his recruiting visit to Tallahassee. The senior walked onto Florida State’s campus wearing an Auburn backpack, which was the program he was transferring from after one season.
Now, Daniels is clearing the air on the much-discussed matter. During an interview on Inside Access, Daniels merely chalked the backpack up to a lack of other options.
“To be fair, that is seriously at that time the only backpack that I had. I was like ‘Well, shoot. I probably should’ve just left it in the car when I got out the car because I didn’t need it in there anyway.’ It was the only book bag that I have,” Daniels said. “I didn’t have a plain Nike book bag. I didn’t have anything that I could’ve brought.”
Daniels didn’t realize the magnitude of the chatter prior to going online.
“Obviously, I didn’t think it was that big of a deal until I saw the pics and was like, ‘That’s not a very good look at all,'” Daniels said.
Daniels transferred to Florida State on Jan. 6. The 6-foot-2, 219-pound Georgia native is considered the No. 30 quarterback in the portal according to the 247Sports Transfer Rankings.
Daniels spent his first 3 seasons at Stanford before playing at Auburn in 2025. In total, Daniels has passed for 4,783 yards and 24 touchdowns while rushing for 1,401 yards and 11 scores.
