Unlike some other NFL teams with rookie quarterbacks, there wasn’t any suspense with the Cincinnati Bengals about their plans at quarterback this year.

Bengals coach Zac Taylor explained it simply this way.

“I know that he was the starter the day he walked through the door, but he’s done everything to verify that for us and earn it,” Taylor said, per Ben Baby.

For his part, Burrow is ready.

“If you waste a day, there’s somebody out there that didn’t waste a day and you lost a day. So I’m a competitor, I want to win every single day, and I’m always competing against myself to get better every day. … I’m going to attack every day like it’s Sunday, like it’s the Super Bowl, that’s how I’m going to approach it,” Burrow said.

The Bengals got the No. 1 overall pick for the opportunity to pick Burrow, the Heisman Trophy winner out of LSU, after they went 2-14, which matched the worst record in franchise history. They kept receiver A.J. Green for another year on a franchise tag and upgraded the offensive line in free agency, to in their minds hopefully give Burrow something to work with.
