The Ole Miss Rebels were sizable favorites over the Auburn Tigers entering play on Saturday. Through one quarter, they failed to score despite five snaps in goal-to-go situations to end the frame. Apparently, in Oxford, the sixth time is the charm.

On the first play of the second quarter, facing 3rd-and-Goal from the Tigers’ 1-yard line, the Rebels brought in defensive tackle Will Echoles to play fullback. Normally, you’d see him function as a lead blocker for a running back. Instead, Ole Miss caught everyone off guard and gave Echoles the rock. He paid off Pete Golding’s confidence in him by finding the end zone.

Echoles is tied with linebacker Suntarine Perkins for the third-most four tackles for loss (4) on the Rebels’ defense. His scoring plunge capped a 17-play, 89-yard drive for Ole Miss that was twice extended by Auburn third down penalties.

The Tigers answered the Rebel touchdown with one of their own on the ensuing possession. Quarterback Byrum Brown used his legs to convert a 4th-and-2 deep in Ole Miss territory to keep Auburn’s drive alive, then tossed a 21-yard scoring pass to Chas Nimrod.

The Rebels blocked Alex McPherson’s extra point to retain their lead. Two plays into the next drive, Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss threw an interception. Two snaps later, Brown fumbled for the Tigers and gave possession back to the Rebels. You can watch the chaotic battle between Auburn and Ole Miss on SEC Network.
