Brendan Sorsby and Texas Tech are mutually parting ways, according to a report from ESPN’s Pete Thamel and several others.
After initially receiving an injunction to play in 2026, the Texas Tech transfer QB will enter the 2026 NFL Supplemental Draft, opting to start his pro career amid major tension between Texas Tech and the Big 12 (as well as the remainder of the college football). Sorsby, of course, has been the center of attention this offseason after admitting to betting on sports while playing for both Indiana and Cincinnati, leading to a lengthy saga of legal filings and politicking as entities across the country prepared to fight the ruling.
The deadline for players to enter the Supplemental Draft is June 22, meaning Sorsby is eligible to be selected when the draft takes place in mid-July. An exact date has not been determined, since Sorsby’s entry is a… special circumstance.
In fact, the Supplemental Draft has not taken place since 2019. For those unsure how it all works, Sorsby has reportedly applied for the draft and will be selected by the team who forfeits a future draft pick based on a system of blind bids.
So, for example, if a certain team believes Sorsby is worthy of a 3rd-round pick, they’d place a bid to take Sorsby by putting up their future 3rd-round pick. Essentially, teams interested in Sorsby would have to gauge which pick they’d be willing to lose to take him — and they’d have to submit the “lowest” bid of the teams interested, without knowing how other teams bid.
