The Oklahoma Sooners suffered a 42-25 loss to the South Carolina Gamecocks on Saturday. The defeat sent the Sooners back to .500 and all but eliminated them from College Football Playoff contention.

Brent Venables knows today’s result could send his team into a full spiral to end its season. He also knows that to avoid such a fate, he needs his players to take some pride in their play. For this reason, he challenged his guys in his postgame press conference.

“My challenge to them… nobody’s required to be here on Monday… if you’re gonna be here on Monday, you better square your jaw up and tighten your screws,” Venables continued. “That’s what every Monday should look like. That’s an expectation.”

“[I can’t] sit here and act like, ‘oh yeah, they’ll be fine.’ What’s fine?” Venables asked prior to making his challenge. “Ain’t nothing fine.”

For much of the year, Oklahoma’s offense caused its downfall. Against South Carolina, both units were at fault. Venables’ defense yielded 521 total yards to the Gamecocks.

Meanwhile his offense failed to do much of anything until the game was out of reach in the fourth quarter. The Sooners’ opportunity to meet their coach’s challenge comes at Florida in Week 10.
