Brian Kelly and the media haven’t always had the best relationship. The chapter between them picked up another sour note last Saturday, when Kelly blasted reporter Michael Cauble for a question about his offense’s struggles following LSU‘s 20-10 win over Florida.

Kelly apologized for the incident on Monday at the beginning of his scheduled press conference. He understands he was in the wrong, but made sure to note that he’s going to have his players’ backs when push comes to shove.

“The way I’m thinking after a game… the emotions… right after it. I haven’t watched any film. It’s difficult to make those assessments of specifics,” Kelly said. “And I’m gonna defend my team. I’m gonna defend my players first and foremost… but [I’ll] do better moving forward.”

Cauble’s question centered on LSU’s sputtering offense. The Tigers are averaging only 20 points per game in 2025 and went 4-of-14 (28.6%) on third down against the Gators. Half of their 102 rushing yards versus Florida came on 1 run. On their other 21 rushing attempts, they averaged a mere 2.4 yards per carry.

Later in his press conference, Kelly revealed quarterback Garrett Nussmeier has been dealing with an injury. Nussmeier’s presence may not be needed in their upcoming game against Southeastern Louisiana, but it’s certainly necessary for LSU’s tussle with Ole Miss on Sept. 27.

We’ll see how Kelly navigates keeping Nussmeier healthy while ensuring victory against the Lions on Saturday at 7:45 p.m. E.T. (SEC Network).
