The No. 4 LSU Tigers are gearing up for a huge in-conference matchup against their rivals in the No. 13 Ole Miss Rebels, and they could be entering the game shorthanded in the backfield.
Head coach Brian Kelly spoke on the SEC teleconference Wednesday morning, and, according to ESPN insider Adam Rittenberg, the fourth-year head coach for the Bayou Bengals said that star sophomore running back Caden Durham is currently questionable for this Saturday’s tilt against the Rebs.
Rittenberg also reports that Kelly mentioned that Durham’s status could change from questionable to probable, or from questionable to out, depending on how he performs in practice for the rest of the week.
The feature tailback for LSU this season is still dealing with an ankle injury he suffered this past weekend during the Tigers’ 56-10 blowout win over the Southeastern Louisiana Lions.
Losing Durham would be a massive blow for the Tigers, as he is currently the team’s top rusher out of the backfield with 213 yards on the ground and 2 touchdowns.
Should he be forced to sit out against Ole Miss this Saturday, then that would obviously put a ton of pressure on the rest of the offense, and would force the rest of the relatively inexperienced running back room down in Baton Rouge to step up in a big moment against a stout Rebel defense.
It will be interesting to see how Durham continues to progress over the next couple of days and what his status against the Rebels ultimately ends up being come gametime.
