The Bronko Nagurski Trophy, which honors the nation’s best defensive player, released its watch list Friday.

A ‘who’s who’ of SEC defensive players highlights the list, as the conference represents 20 of the 88 names.

Last year’s winner, Arizona linebacker Scooby Wright III, is attempting to become only the second player in the history of the award to win it twice (Northwestern’s Pat Fitzgerald). The award’s five finalists will not be named until Nov. 19, so there’s plenty of time for players on this list — or off this list — to make a case.

Here are the 20 SEC players in early contention:

  • Alabama DE Jonathan Allen
  • Tennessee DE Derek Barnett
  • LSU LB Kendall Beckwith
  • Missouri LB Kentrell Brothers
  • Ole Miss DB Tony Conner
  • Georgia LB Leonard Floyd
  • Texas A&M DE Myles Garrett
  • Florida DB Vernon Hargreaves III
  • Georgia LB Jordan Jenkins
  • Auburn DB Jonathan Jones
  • Mississippi State DT Chris Jones
  • Auburn DE Carl Lawson
  • Tennessee LB Curt Maggitt
  • Auburn LB Cassanova McKinzy
  • LSU DB Jalen Mills
  • Florida LB Antonio Morrison
  • Ole Miss DT Robert Nkemdiche
  • Alabama LB Reggie Ragland
  • Mississippi State DB Will Redmond
  • Alabama DT A’Shawn Robinson
