No, the headline is not hyperbole. This might literally be the absolute worst fake punt attempt in the history of college football.
Last night, BYU was facing 4th-and-19 from its own end zone, down 14-10 early in the second quarter. That’s a pretty good time to actually punt, right?
That’s not what happened. First-year head coach Kalani Sitake gave the nod to his special teams coordinator to go ahead and proceed for a fake. And, as anyone could have probably guessed, it failed miserably.
Sitake offered the following explanation before heading to the locker room at halftime:
“Well, on film we thought we had it. We wanted to be aggressive,” he said. “We came to win the game and it just didn’t work out. They made a great adjustment — something that we haven’t seen in prior games. But we wanted to be aggressive and it didn’t hurt us. Our defense had our backs.”
Boise State was unable to capitalize on the glorious field position (and arguably one of the worst coaching decisions ever made at the collegiate level) by missing a field goal on the next possession, but did end up winning the game, 28-27.
