CFB writer discusses scenario where Auburn retains Cadillac Williams
Should Auburn win out over Alabama in the yearly Iron Bowl, could Cadillac Williams have the “interim” removed from his head coaching title?
Auburn beat writer Nathan King joined the Matt McClearin podcast to discuss Williams’ tenure in at Auburn, saying the Tigers probably want to have their person in place before the Iron Bowl, rather than after it. What that means for Williams is uncertainty, but that shouldn’t detract from the job he has already done on The Plains according to King.
“Assuming Cadillac goes 2-2 here as interim coach, and really with what he’s done reinvigorating the program, just keeping fans interested, keeping players engaged, and making sure everyone plays loose and easy, it’s been the perfect approach. It’s pretty much exactly what Auburn needed in this situation. If anything, it’s a great audition for him to be part of the next staff. “

Williams was a standout player at Auburn, and was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first round of the 2005 NFL Draft. He played 6 seasons with Tampa Bay, and one in St. Louis. Williams was hired as Auburn’s running backs coach under head coach Gus Malzahn in 2019, and was retained by new head coach Bryan Harsin when Malzahn was fired in 2020.
Last month, Auburn fired Harsin and named Williams the interim head coach.
