The road to the NFL hasn’t been a smooth one for former Georgia LB Roquan Smith. After publicly requesting a trade, Smith then sat out much of the Bears’ spring practice. After the Bears refused to allow a move, Smith rejoined the team.

According to GM Ryan Poles, the Bears are “working on their relationship” with the former Bulldog:

“First of all, heโ€™s a good player โ€” thatโ€™s never changed,โ€ Poles said. โ€œAnd heโ€™s a good dude. I have faith that heโ€™s gonna have a good year, and weโ€™ll work on our relationship and all that.”

Poles also expressed his desire to keep Smith, saying “at the end of the day we have to do whatโ€™s best for this organization, but my intention is to make sure Roquan Smith is on this team.โ€

Smith isn’t letting the past impact his level of play this season:

“Iโ€™m not focused on that, if Iโ€™m being completely honest,โ€ Smith said. โ€œMy focus is on making this year the best year I can and then go from there. I donโ€™t want to look forward too much to the future or anything like that. Iโ€™m just focused on now, having the best year I can with my teammates and playing the game I love. Thatโ€™s what means the most to me.”
