Colin Cowherd has seen enough of the annual spring game in college football, and he’s praising those programs who have already made the call to cancel the traditional event.

“Five major college football programs: USC, Texas, Florida State, Nebraska, Missouri and several others are going to follow. They’re canceling their spring game, and they should. There’s no need for it,” Cowherd proclaimed The Herd.

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian recently confirmed the Longhorns were bypassing the annual event. Mizzou confirmed its decision in a statement, though the Tigers also announced every spring practice session would be officially closed to the public.

As for Nebraska, head coach Matt Rhule expressed his desire to bypass a spring game because of widespread tampering in the sport. “I don’t want these guys all being able to watch our guys,” explained Rhule.

It’s the kind of move Cowherd is loving because it makes the sport look “as it should, like pro football.” That includes the new expanded College Football Playoff where Cowherd believes it is a good thing that teams must now beat 2-3 elite teams in the postseason to be able to lift the trophy.

“Bill Belichick is now in college football. Chip Kelly left college and went back to the pros — why not? They’re the same thing,” claimed Cowherd. “I’ll just take the bigger check.”

As for spring football overall, Cowherd described the endeavor as “a relic. It doesn’t matter.”

As teams continue setting their spring plans, it will be interesting to see if any programs still opt for the traditional spring game model.
