While the CFP remains at 12 teams for the 2026 season, there is one change of note for the season. In previous years, the 12 bids went to the 5 highest-ranked conference champions and next 7 highest-ranked teams. Starting this season, it is officially designated as bids for the Power 4 champions (ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, SEC) and the highest-ranked team from the Group of 6 (American, Conference USA, MAC, Mountain West, Pac-12, Sun Belt). Notre Dame will only be included if it is one of the top 12 teams.
