We’re 8 weeks into the season and it’s shaping up to be an exciting stretch to determine who’ll reach the College Football Playoff. However, one of the CFP selection committee members is abruptly stepping down.
CFP selection committee member Randall McDaniel is leaving his position this fall for the remainder of the season because of personal reasons, according to CFP executive director Rich Clark. McMichael will be back on the committee for the 2026-27 campaign.
Since the season is ongoing, there won’t be a replacement for McDaniel. This signals the fourth occurrence in a dozen years that the CFP selection committee will have below the standard amount of 13 members, per a press release.
The role of the CFP committee is to rank the top 25 teams and then designate the 12 teams for the playoff format. In-person meetings by the committee start on Nov. 3-4 with the rankings going every week until the CFP bracket announcement on Dec. 7.
This season’s CFP will begin with on-campus first round games on Dec. 19-20, followed by the quarterfinals (Dec. 30-31) in the Cotton Bowl, Orange Bowl, Rose Bowl, and Sugar Bowl. The semifinals (Jan. 8-9) are slated for the Fiesta Bowl and Peach Bowl. The CFP National Championship will take place on Jan. 19 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens.
