Former Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs missed the first training camp practice of the year for the Detroit Lions on Wednesday. Though head coach Dan Campbell said that he is dealing with a “little bit of a back issue,” it’s believed that Gibbs is holding in for a new contract ahead of his 4th season in the NFL.
Campbell indirectly indicated as much on Thursday. The Lions head coach spoke further regarding the situation, insisting that he’s “not even sweating” Gibbs’ absence.
โYou guys know how I feel, how we feel about Gibbs — and what the team feels about him. Iโll leave it at that,โ Campbell said Thursday. โListen, all the other stuff — my job is to coach whoโs out there right now. And I love the kid. But Iโve got a team to coach right now… at some point here itโll get done. Itโs going to get done. Iโm not even sweating it.โ
Gibbs was selected No. 12 overall by the Lions in 2023 and is considered one of the best running backs in the NFL. He’s not the only running back to be apparently staging a hold-in either, as former Texas RB Bijan Robinson was also absent from Atlanta’s practice on Wednesday.
