Dan Lanning is not following a growing trend of college football programs scrapping their annual spring games.
There have been concerns about spring games serving as showcases for other programs to poach players out of the transfer portal. Texas coach Steve Sarkisian cited the number of games his team over the past 2 seasons in his decision to not hold a spring game in 2025.
Lanning, on the other hand, is a spring game traditionalist. Speaking to the media about spring practice, the Oregon coach said his team will play spring games as long as he is the head coach of the Ducks.
Dan Lanning says Oregon will indeed play football in its spring game: "I think it's the best way for us to get better. … For me it's the right way to cap off the spring. As long as I'm here we'll be doing spring games."

Oregon set its annual spring game for April 26 at 1 p.m. PT. The Ducks are coming off an impressive 2024 in which they won the Big Ten and earned the No. 1 seed in the College Football Playoff.
In March, Lanning agreed to a new contract that came with a $2 million increase in salary, bumping his pay to $11 million per year.
