Dan Mullen has taken Mississippi State to unprecedented heights. AP No. 1 ranking. Six straight bowl appearances. One of just three 10-win seasons in school history.
The only bad thing about that is Mullen has become quite the attractive candidate for head coaching vacancies across the country as a result of that success.
Mullenย told the Daily Journal’s Logan Lowery thatย he’s happy in Starkville.
โTrust me in this, I love being the head coach at Mississippi State,โ Mullen said. โBoth my kids were born here in Starkville and I have no intention of ever leaving. But itโs not really my decision whether or not I leave. Itโs much more (the fans), the president and the athletic directorโs. Iโm going to be here as long as they want me to be the head coach at Mississippi State.โ
If he’s true to his word,ย Mullen is poised to become the school’s winningest coach in a matter of two to three years as he’s only 20 wins shy of surpassing Jackie Sherrill’s 74. However, Sherrill needed 13 seasons to collect his total while Mullen has only been at MSU for seven.
In a way, Mullen welcomesย the rumorย mill that surroundsย himย every offseason.ย That’s because that means eyes are on StarkVegas.
โItโs really an honor when all of that stuff comes out,โ Mullen said. โItโs an honor because people all around America are looking at whatโs going on in Starkville, Miss., and saying thatโs what we want.โ
