Deion Sanders made his name in football as a player in the NFL.

But a few years from now, Sanders will be able to say he’s made most of his money as a college coach.

On Friday, Colorado announced a new contract extension for Sanders that will pay him an impressive $54 million over the next 5 years. In signing that deal, Sanders becomes one of just a handful of coaches who will make 8-figures during the 2025 college football season.

Estimates vary on how much Sanders earned in the NFL. OvertheCap puts his career earnings at a little more than $43.8 million. Spotrac, on the other hand, has Sanders at close to $33.5 million. Either way, if Sanders fulfills this 5-year contract, his salary at Colorado will easily surpass what he made in the NFL. It’s worth noting, though, those figures don’t account for money Sanders made from endorsement deals or during his time in Major League Baseball.

Sanders has spent 2 seasons as Colorado’s head coach. The 2024 campaign was particularly successful, as the Buffs reached a bowl game and produced a Heisman Trophy winner in Travis Hunter. Shedeur Sanders is also projected to be a top-5 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Sanders and Colorado will face high expectations once again in 2025 as the Buffs look for their first Big 12 title since 2001.
