Deion Sanders looks to be one of the hottest names for this year’s coaching carousel. There have already been several Power 5 coaches let go, and the Jackson State head coach has been linked to multiple vacancies, as well as some potential openings.
On Saturday, FOX “Big Noon Kickoff” analysts Urban Meyer and Reggie Bush shared their thoughts on Sanders as a Power 5 head coach. Both shared their admiration for Sanders and what he has done at Jackson State.
“I’ve been friends with Deion for a long time. I actually talked to him this week,” Meyer said. “Reggie, I’m really impressed with the discipline of his team, the way he talks. We talked about he’s sitting out a player because he’s not going to class. I’m really impressed with what he’s been doing.
“I promise you, at the end of the year, that man is going to have a decision to make. That decision’s not far off because there’s probably already stuff going on behind the scenes. But Deion Sanders should and will be a Power 5 head coach.”
Bush recalled his admiration for Sanders as a player and expressed appreciation for his work as Jackson State’s head coach.
“I’ve got to say this one thing, Deion Sanders is actually the reason why I started playing football, watching him on TV,” Bush said. “When he was in college, he would go back and return punts, that’s why I started returning punts. Watching his showmanship on the field, getting the crowd hype, that was everything I embodied, tried to do on a football field.
“I love what Deion has done for HBCUs, putting a huge spotlight on HBCUs. It’s been a long time coming for somebody to do that, but I love what he’s doing for his team.”
Meyer pointed out Sanders would be the first coach to ever make the jump from HBCU to Power 5.
When host Rob Stone joked that it’s “when” not “if” Sanders makes the jump, Bush nodded in agreement.
