Florida coach Jim McElwain has been on a mission to upgrade facilities for the football program.

Of course, the Gators’ new indoor practice facility has been put to use quite often already. The Gators’ dorms will be updated this summer, and many other facilities in The Swamp’s south end zone could also get renovations.

However, right across the street from Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, a major renovation is underway at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center.

The University of Florida and the University Athletic Association are working jointly on the $64.5 million project. It isn’t expected to be completed until December of 2016, meaning the basketball team will have to play some early 2016-17 home games “around the state of Florida, in cities and venues to be determined.”

Here’s a look as demolition of the O’Dome began this week. The video is courtesy of floridagators.com.

Here’s a look at a rendering of the O’Dome once the renovation is finished.
