DeSean Bishop had a career game on Saturday, rushing the ball 34 times for 220 yards and three touchdowns while leading Tennessee to a 24-14 victory against Auburn. The way that Bishop was playing, the matchup looked personal against the Tigers, and after the game, Bishop said that was indeed the case.

“I’m not going to lie, I’m going to keep it real,” Bishop told reporters after the game. “This game was very personal just from the mindset of… (Alex) Golesh. He was one of the reasons why I was a walk-on at the University of Tennessee. So, the mindset of that was, just throughout the whole game, every time I touched the ball, they’ve got to feel me. They’ve got to feel what they were missing when they got me here. So anytime I touched the ball, it’s a purpose. I’m trying to make people feel me when I run the ball. That just comes from who I was and who I am.”

Bishop was a 3-star running back in the class of 2023. Hailing from Knoxville, he wanted to play at Tennessee, but the only way he could play there was as a walk-on. Alex Golesh was the offensive coordinator for the Volunteers throughout the recruiting process for Bishop, but ultimately left to become the head coach at USF before Bishop enrolled.

On a day when freshman quarterback Brandon Faizon was benched because of his struggles, the timing of a career performance by Bishop couldn’t have come at a better time for Tennessee.
