Starting the season down a player or two due to suspension isn’t that uncommon in college football. Having 10 players suspended, as Florida now does, is something entirely else.

If you missed the news, Florida announced the suspensions of starting running back Jordan Scarlett and redshirt freshman receiver Rick Wells Wednesday afternoon. They join LB James Houston, OL Kadeem Telfort, DE Keivonnis Davis, WR Antonio Callaway, DL Jordan Smith, DL Richerd Desir-Jones, LB Ventrell Miller and WR James Robinson as players forced to sit out the opener against Michigan.

Now it looks like we know why.

According to Mark Long of the AP, Scarlett and Wells were also members of the debit card scam that got all the above-mentioned players, with the exception of the freshman Robinson, suspended indefinitely.

The Gators are set to open the season Saturday against Michigan the season at AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys. In a game that looked like a toss up heading into the season, Florida has done itself no favors by having double digits suspensions heading into the game.
