Dezz Ricks spent the 2023 season at Alabama, but announced after that season that he would be transferring to Texas A&M.

On Tuesday, while talking to reporters about the decision to transfer from Alabama, Ricks said that it was an “easy decision” to make, as the talent on the defensive line as well as his relationship with defensive coordinator Jay Bateman was just too good to pass up after Nick Saban decided to retire.

“I started my freshman year at Bama, and transferred you know when Nick Saban retired,” Ricks said. “Coach Bateman is somebody who coached my god brother at UNC. When I was in eighth grade I used to go up there and watch him. When I heard coach Bateman was the DC, we connected when I entered the portal … Then I also looked at the defensive line and I knew they were pretty solid and it was an easy decision for me to come here.”

Last year for the Aggies, Ricks finished with 17 tackles. His best game of the season was against Arkansas, when he finished with 5 tackles and an interception.

How the defense fares will play a huge role in this season as the Aggies offense has a chance to be one of the best offenses in all of college football.

Ricks is a part of a secondary that has some extremely talented players in Julio Humphrey and Will Lee III. The defense lost some major talent from last season, especially on the defensive line in Nic Scourton and Shemar Stewart now in the NFL. That will put a little bit more pressure on the secondary to be good as the defensive line will take a little time to improve.

The Aggies open the season on Aug. 30 against UTSA, but have a huge rematch against Notre Dame on the horizon just two weeks later.
