Jackson High School star running back EJ Crowell will be suspended for Friday’s season opener against the Saraland Spartans, according to a report.
Crowell, an Alabama commit, violated the AHSAA’s amateurism bylaws by accepting a gift. This gift has since been returned.
That’s per Simone Eli of WKRG, who reports the Central Board of Control accepted the self-imposed ruling on Wednesday, and Crowell is not expected to miss Jackson’s second game of the season at Demopolis.
What once looked like a top-10 matchup in Alabama now lacks the same firepower. MaxPreps has Jackson ranked as the No. 5 team and Saraland as the No. 7 team in the state of Alabama.
Crowell is ranked as the No. 2 running back in the nation and the No. 3 player in Alabama according to 247Sports Composite rankings. He committed to Alabama this past June after helping lead Jackson to a 4A State Championship.
Last season as a sophomore, Crowell rushed for 130.9 yards per game and had 33 total touchdowns. In the Alabama 4A State Championship game, Crowell had 12 carries for 140 yards and added three touchdowns.
Crowell will look to pick things up where he left off after serving his one-game suspension.
