ESPN analyst identifies Florida as potential ‘bounce-back’ team in 2026
Florida is hoping to take a big step forward under new head coach Jon Sumrall in 2026.
The Gators hired Sumrall to replace Billy Napier at the end of last season. They retained much of their top talent and brought in several high-level transfers as well as respected offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner this offseason.
It’s those additions that have ESPN’s Bill Connelly making the case for Florida as a “bounce-back” candidate for 2026. Florida was one of 14 teams โ and the only SEC program โ mentioned in Connelly’s recent piece breaking down programs who could be significantly improved this fall.
Here’s Connelly’s analysis:
I’ve been wrong about Florida’s capabilities plenty of times through the years, but I haven’t been particularly wrong about Sumrall. Granted, I was pretty high on Sumrall’s predecessor, Billy Napier, too, but after a genuine offensive collapse last season, the bar for improvement in Sumrall’s first season is low. Florida collapsed to 89th in offensive SP+, and while new starting quarterbackย Aaron Philoย — who followed new coordinator Buster Faulkner fromย Georgia Techย — isn’t incredibly proven, he was exciting in a small sample. There seem to be pieces for a strong run game, and a decent defense returns a solid core. I’d be shocked if the Gators didn’t improve into at least the 40s in SP+, and probably a lot more than that.
Florida is coming off of a disastrous 4-8 campaign and hasn’t been particularly relevant on a national level since the beginning of the Dan Mullen era when it won the Orange Bowl and Peach Bowl in back to back seasons.

Florida is one of a small handful of programs that owns a National Championship in the 21st century but has not reached the College Football Playoff since its inception in 2014.
The Gators, led by Sumrall, Faulkner and Philo, will be looking to change that in 2026-27.
