The SEC’s championship run, and whether it is over or not, is a hot topic both inside and outside SEC Media Days this week.
During his national radio show, ESPN’s Colin Cowherd suggested that it’s indeed over for the Alabama Crimson Tide and the SEC as a whole:
“It’s just got too many good teams. Alabama doesn’t have a quarterback, you can’t go into this year with no quarterback in that conference. You’re not going to win 12 games, you’re out of your mind.
Alabama’s schedule is the toughest college schedule I have ever seen in my life. I have never seen a college schedule that tough. Ever. Auburn’s no day at the beach, that’s extreme. First week of October to first week of December it’s like 8 teams that could be ranked. Come on! Half of them on the road. You’re not going to beat all these teams.
First of all, you’re going to get beat up. you’re gonna be without seven or eight starters by the end of it. You play good, physical football teams one after another, another, another. Tennessee, Arkansas, Georgia, LSU, you’re going to be down seven starters by a month. It doesn’t matter how good you are! That new quarterback is gonna be missing three of his offensive line guys and a tight end!”
What are the main factors that will make it difficult for an SEC team to win the national title this year? I’d suggest they are as follows:
- SEC teams beating eachother up during the regular season leading to blemished records
- Inexperience at quarterback around the conference
- Urban Meyer and Ohio State: Not only are the Buckeyes a legitimate team as we saw last year, they have an easier road to the College Playoff than any SEC team
