Ex-Ole Miss TE Dae’Quan Wright to join LSU if he clears NFL waivers, per report
Ex-Ole Miss tight end Dae’Quan Wright is being waived by the Cleveland Browns, and if Wright clears waivers the former Rebel has a deal in place to play at LSU this fall, according to a report by ESPN insider Adam Schefter on Sunday afternoon.
Schefter’s report, which if it comes true would make football history, came courtesy of Wright’s agents, Drew Rosenhaus and Kyle Lincoln. The history would be this — Wright is thought to be the first player ever who would play for an NFL team before going back to college and resuming his collegiate career.
Wright recently entered the transfer portal, causing his now former head coach in Cleveland, Todd Monken, to react in disbelief that something like this could happen in the sport of football. Now, according to Schefter’s report, it’s well on the way to happening, and if it does then not only would Wright be returning to the college game, he’d be going back to the SEC, where he played for Ole Miss in 2024 and 2025.
But Wright went undrafted this past spring, and after a brief stint with the Philadelphia Eagles and now reportedly with the Browns, Wright has apparently decided to make the historical U-turn back to college football if he clears NFL waivers.
Wright is 1 of the beneficiaries of a temporary restraining order made by a Louisiana court that made 33 athletes in various sports, including 16 football players, eligible to return to college. Those 33 athletes were part of a lawsuit in which they were seeking a 5th year of collegiate eligibility, and Wright is well on his way to taking advantage of the court ruling.
LSU would be gaining a top-notch pass catcher in Wright, who helped Ole Miss make the College Football Playoff last season while catching 39 passes for 635 yards and 5 touchdowns.
If Wright does make it back to college football and the SEC, he’ll apparently be joining a loaded LSU roster that has a chance to make noise in the conference this season. Here is what the Kalshi market is currently saying about the Tigers’ chances to do something special and win the SEC as they start a new era in 2026:
