The Gators impressed one of the top recruits of 2017 on his first visit to UF.
Five-star CB Deangelo Gibbs, the No. 2 cornerback and No. 10 overall prospect of the 2017 class according to 247Sports composite rankings, was among the 14 visitors Florida hosted this weekend. He spoke to SEC Country’s Zach Abolverdi and gave a very positive review of his weekend in Gainesville:
“The trip exceeded my expectations,” Gibbs said. “It went real well. I saw things I had never seen before at any other school. I’d have to rate this visit a nine. Nothing’s perfect. If it was perfect, I would have a committed. But the visit helped Florida’s chances a lot.
“I never had a chance to come down before. So it was great finally getting to see the campus, check out the facilities and just be around the coaches and players.”
Gibbs also spoke with Abolverdi about Florida’s reputation of fielding top performers in the secondary:
“It fits me perfectly,” he said. “They produce elite DB’s and put them in the league. They just have a lot of success, and making it to the NFL is my goal.”
Florida seems to be expecting more defensive backs departing for “the league” according to a tidbit Gibbs shared with GatorCountry.com’s Andrew Spivey:
“(Defensive backs coach Torrian Gray) just tells me that he wants me down there bad,” he said. “He was saying that they need more defensive backs, I was like that’s pretty cool. He was just pretty much telling me to come down there and replace some guys that are leaving this year.”
Gibbs also told Spivey that he could be going back to The Swamp soon:
“Pretty much all of the schools that have offered me are recruiting me hard,” Gibbs said. “I’m still pretty open right now and I plan to announce my decision after the season. I have some visits coming up this spring and I think I’m going to Florida’s spring game.”
UF’s spring game is schedule for April 8.
