New Florida head coach Jon Sumrall has been on the job in Gainesville for a little over a month now, and he’s been hitting the transfer portal hard early on to sure up his squad heading into spring practice.
The former head man for the Tulane Green Wave has already secured several key commitments from big-time portal targets, and he added another on Monday in former Baylor defensive lineman DK Kalu.
A 3-star recruit in the 2023 cycle, Kalu committed to and signed with the Bears out of high school over Houston, Iowa State, and several other programs. He redshirted his first year on campus and saw limited action in 2024 and 2025 before entering the portal.
At 6’4 and 309 pounds, Kalu possesses all of the physical upside to become a difference maker in the trenches on defense for Sumrall and the Gators, a trait he picked up from his dad: former NFL defensive end N.D. Kalu.
Kalu Sr. was a fifth-round draft pick by the Philadelphia Eagles out of Rice in the 1997 NFL Draft, and he carved out an impressive 11-year career at the pro level, racking up 31 sacks and 136 tackles for 3 different teams.
Sumrall and the rest of his staff will now be looking for the younger Kalu to take after his old man with the Gators and blossom into a dependable presence in the trenches.
