Florida reveals when Jon Sumrall will leave Tulane, join the Gators
The Florida football program is likely excited to get new head coach Jon Sumrall on campus so he can get to work on revitalizing the Gators’ future.
The only issue is that Sumrall’s former role still requires his services, at least for a bit longer.
The head coach has guided Tulane to a 10-2 campaign that landed the Green Wave in the American Athletic Conference Championship Game, which is slated for at 8 p.m. ET kickoff on Friday in New Orleans. A win in that matchup would likely award Sumrall & Co. a College Football Playoff bid, thus extending their season further into December.
That could create issues with Sumrall needing to get started with recruiting and other responsibilities in Gainesville, but the school has already come out and revealed that it is content to wait on Sumrall to finish his current campaign.
Per a released statement from Florida:
... Sumrall will officially take over the Gators program following the conclusion of Tulane’s season.
Tulane will compete in the American Athletic Conference Championship Game on December 5, and a win would likely propel the Green Wave into the College Football Playoff.
Of course, a loss in the AAC title game would allow Sumrall to start work with the Gators sooner, as it is unlikely he’d coach in a non-CFP bowl game.
