Following a 20-13 overnight loss to Stanford, Florida State has now lost 4 straight ACC games and is tumbling headlong toward a coaching hot-seat situation of its own.
Mike Norvell, who is in his 6th season coaching the Seminoles, has now won just 5 of his team’s last 20 games and is 1-11 in ACC play in that time. Saturday night’s road loss at Stanford also puts Florida State tied for last in the 18-team conference alongside Boston College (1-3 overall, 0-4 ACC).
Florida State had its chances to take down the Cardinal (3-4, 2-2) in the fourth quarter. But Seminoles quarterback Tommy Castellanos was injured on a targeting call against Stanford’s Mitch Leigber with 2:14 to play. Backup Kevin Sperry navigated FSU the rest of the way, including on the game-ending drive that started at the FSU 20.
The Cardinal were flagged for pass interference with :02 to play when Sperry tried to hit Duce Robinson in the end zone, giving FSU a chance at one final untimed down at the Stanford 2. But Gavin Sawchuk got denied inches from the goal line after catching a short Sperry pass by the Cardinal.
Florida State is off this coming week, and returns to action at home against Wake Forest on Nov. 1.
