Former Alabama assistant linked to Cal head coaching vacancy
The California Golden Bears (6-5, 3-4 ACC) fired head coach Justin Wilcox on Sunday afternoon following their disastrous 31-10 loss to Stanford in The Big Game. Now, they’re on the hunt for a new leader for their program. And early reports say that one of their top choices has ties to the SEC.
According to On3 Sports’ Pete Nakos, Oregon defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi is a “prime candidate” to replace Wilcox in Berkeley. Lupoi, a Cal alum (2000-05), served on Alabama‘s staff in a variety of roles from 2014-18.

Lupoi spent 3 seasons coaching in the NFL before joining the Ducks’ staff in 2022, when they hired head coach Dan Lanning. He has been the defensive coordinator in Eugene for his entire tenure there. Oregon’s defense is No. 3 in the country in yards allowed per game (248.7) this season. The Ducks are also 1 of just 8 schools holding opponents to fewer than 15 points per game through 13 weeks.
Cal wraps up its regular season versus SMU on Saturday (8:00 p.m. E.T., ESPN2). The Golden Bears will play in a bowl game for the third consecutive year after that. Tupoi and Oregon face Washington on Saturday (3:30 p.m. E.T., CBS). The Ducks will presumably participate in the College Football Playoff after that.
