Former Alabama defensive lineman Jonathan Allen is expected to be released by the Minnesota Vikings, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. Allen played just one season in Minnesota.
According to Fowler, the Vikings are releasing Allen due to salary cap constraints. Minnesota is $40 million over the cap and are expected to use this move to get under.
Before Allen landed with the Vikings, he spent 8 seasons with the Washington Commanders, who drafted him with the 17th pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. Allen reached the Pro Bowl twice with Washington and has recorded 469 tackles, 45.5 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, 5 fumble recoveries and 5 pass deflections during his time in the NFL.
He still has a lot left in the tank, too. Allen, who is 31, totaled a career-high 69 combined tackles with 3.5 sacks in 2025, starting all 17 games for Minnesota.
Before he entered the NFL, Allen was an absolute monster at Alabama. The former Crimson Tide defensive end was named a first-team All-SEC member from 2014-2016 and earned the Defensive Player of the Year award for his stellar 2016 season. Of course, Allen also won a national title with the Crimson Tide in 2015.
Minnesota has a 34% chance to reach the postseason next year according to Kalshi. Here’s a look at more of the top odds:
