Former Alabama player charged with fraud for allegedly impersonating multiple NFL players in loan scam

Luther Davis, a former Alabama football player, is reportedly facing fraud charges for accusations that he impersonated multiple NFL players.
According to The Guardian, a criminal information document indicating Davis has agreed to a plea deal, state that he and CJ Evins, “obtained at least thirteen fraudulent loans totaling more than $19,845,000.” The Guardian’s article states that the CI document lists 3 of 13 loans.

Davis and Evins are said to have impersonated Cleveland Browns tight end David Njoku in a loan for $4.025 million, Green Bay Packers defensive back Xavier McKinney in a loan for $4.35 million and Atlanta Falcons QB Michael Penix Jr. in a loan for $3.3 million.
“Beginning no later than in or around May 2023 and continuing through in or about October 2024, the defendant, Luther Davis, and CJ Evins, executed a scheme to fraudulently obtain millions of dollars in loans from multiple lenders, including, but not limited to, Aliya Sports and All Pro Capital Funding, by impersonating professional football players and falsely claiming those players were seeking multi-million dollar Loans,” federal prosecutors stated in the charges against Davis and Evins.
Davis and Evins’ scheme reportedly had several stages. The pair would register at the Georgia Secretary of State companies with names closely related to the impersonated player’s name or initials. They then would open bank accounts for the fake companies and also create related email accounts.
The next step involved obtaining fake identification documents. Upon contacting loan brokers, the duo would provide fraudulent documents, including fabricated personal financial statements and bank statements for the fake companies. Davis, per prosecutors, appeared at virtual loan closings using wigs and makeup to disguise himself as the athletes he was impersonating.
“Unbeknownst to the broker and the lender, none of the players who were supposedly receiving the loans attended any of these closings,” the criminal information document reads, per The Guardian. “Rather, defendant Davis dressed in disguise and impersonated the players, providing fake identification documents to convince the notary.”
Davis was part of Nick Saban‘s 2007 class at Alabama. He played 4 seasons for the Crimson Tide, helping UA win the BCS national championship for the 2009 season.
