SMU appears to have moved quickly to fill its vacant head coaching spot with Sonny Dykes set to head from Dallas to Fort Worth to take over at TCU.

According to 247Sports, the Mustangs have hired Miami offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee for the role. The 38-year-old Lashlee is in his 2nd season with the Hurricanes.

SMU is familiar ground for Lashlee, who was the Mustangs’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2018-2019. That followed a 1-year stint at UConn in the same role. Prior to that, he served in that spot under his high school coach, Gus Malzahn, first at Arkansas State in 2012 before following him to Auburn. He was on the Tigers’ sideline from 2013-2016.

As for Dykes, his current record is 30-17 with the Mustangs. They are 8-3 this year, with a 4-3 mark in the AAC.
