With summer practice comes summer cuts. Unfortunately, a former Kentucky defender was on the chopping block. On Sunday, the Carolina Panthers released cornerback Chris Westry, per the team website.

The 6-4, 197-pound former Wildcat played all 51 games of his college career, starting 34. He racked up 134 tackles (3.5 for loss), 3 interceptions, 2 sacks, 15 passes defensed, 1 forced fumble and 1 fumble recovery.

Westry was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Dallas Cowboys in 2019. He spent some time on the injured reserve and practice squads before the expiration of his contract in 2021. Westry bounced to the Baltimore Ravens, where he was placed on injured reserve before settling with Carolina Panthers in 2022.

Westry joined the likes of running back Darius Bradwell, tight end Nate Becker, offensive lineman Wyatt Miller, and linebacker Kamal Martin being cut from the Panthers. This was the first cut of the season, when NFL teams cut their rosters from 90 to 85. Two more cuts will follow, slicing rosters down to 80 and 53 members, respectively.
