Ole Miss already has a great tight end in Evan Engram.
Rebels coach Hugh Freeze, however, sees potential for freshman TE Octavious Cooley to be even better.
“Octavious Cooley looks like he could be a special player,” Freeze said, according to The Clarion-Ledger. “He has a learning curve he has to get quickly. If he can handle the mental curve of learning everything that goes on at that position, he’s got the talent to be a special one. Time will tell if he is.
“No doubt he has the physique and athletic ability to be arguably the best we’ve had since I’ve been around. He’s not Evan in running routes, but he’s got the potential to do more, to be more suited to do everything.”
Doing more than Engram would mean setting new records. Engram currently holds the the school records for most catches (97) and most receiving yards (1,394) by a tight end, and has the opportunity to add to both marks this fall as a senior.
Cooley, a Laurel (Miss.) product who currently measures 6-foot-3, 246 pounds, was rated the No. 6 tight end and No. 7 Mississippi prospect in the 2016 class by 247Sports Composite.
Freeze recently told The Oxford Eagle that this freshman class could be the team’s best ever.
