Fresno State establishes contingency plan in case players’ cleats melt on field

It was scorching hot on Saturday afternoon in Fresno, Calif., where Fresno State hosted UConn in 1 of the first games of the 2021 college football season. Just how hot was it? Well, it was so hot that players may have had to worry about their cleats melting.
No, really.
During the CBS Sports Network pregame coverage, there was a report that Fresno State had a contingency plan in case its players’ cleats melted on the field (h/t Mike Anthony of CT Insider). The Bulldogs had extra pairs of cleats on the sideline in case this actually happened.

Early on, Fresno State appeared to be handling the heat better, as it had a 14-0 lead with 4 minutes to go in the second quarter. This was UConn’s first game since November 2019, because it didn’t play in 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Huskies will likely be hoping for more manageable weather in their second game. And considering they’re at home the next 2 weeks, that should be the case.
