Garrett Nussmeier is facing high expectations entering the 2025 season. Nussmeier is one of the biggest favorites to win the 2025 Heisman Trophy, and is considered to be one of the best quarterbacks in the country.
While he is a talented player, a big reason for the optimism for the offense is because the receiver rooms looks like it could compete with any in the country. Two big time transfers came to Baton Rouge this off-season, as former Oklahoma receiver Nic Anderson and ex-Kentucky receiver Barion Brown transferred in.
Both of those guys have been making big-time plays in the SEC over the past couple of seasons, and figure to be key contributors for the Tigers this season. During Monday’s SEC Media Days in Atlanta, Nussmeier was asked about his receiving group, and he made a claim that is sure to get the attention of LSU fans.
“As far as the receiver room, I don’t think that we have a receiver that runs over a 4.4 [40-yard dash],” Nussmeier said on Monday. “That’s exciting. A lot of versatility and a lot of speed.”
Brown had 29 catches for 361 yards and 3 touchdowns last season for the Wildcats, but part of those lower numbers is because Kentucky had major issues at the quarterback position. Pairing him with other skilled players and an NFL caliber quarterback, and Brown could be in store for a huge season.
Anderson was out last year with an injury, but two years ago he had 38 catches for 798 yards and 10 touchdowns for the Sooners. He was in a car accident on Monday, and while he is expected to be ready to go in Week 1, he did receive medical treatment.
LSU’s leading returning receiver is Aaron Anderson, who had 61 catches for 884 yards and 5 touchdowns last year. Zavion Thomas and Chris Hilton Jr. are two more speed guys who are capable of making big plays.
All of the talent is there for the Tigers, and if they can deliver like Nussmeier thihks they can, it could be a special season in Baton Rouge.
