Garrett Nussmeier was the starting quarterback last year, and he had some big time moments for LSU. He helped his team jump to a 6-1 start, though their season was derailed after losing to Texas A&M in late October, 38-23.
The Tigers were in complete control of the game at the half, as LSU led 17-0. However, the Aggies brought in quarterback Marcel Reed to get the team back on track, and he delivered with 3 rushing touchdowns while completing his only 2 passes for 70 yards. Nussmeier, on the other hand, threw for 405 yards and 2 touchdowns, but he also threw 3 crucial interceptions that helped the Aggies get the win.
The 2 SEC quarterbacks were able to spend some time together at the Manning Passing Academy in June. During the SEC Media Days on Monday in Atlanta, Nussmeier was asked about if he had any conversations with Reed about the matchup last season.
“Not too much,” Nussmeier said. “I may have made a couple of jokes in there, like I gave it to him, or something like that. I was, like, you’re welcome, or something, and we had a laugh. He’s a good football player, obviously. He can make plays with his feet and obviously with his arm. Very excited with him. He’s a great dude, great person. Looking forward to watching him this year.”
Both of these quarterbacks are leading teams that have expectations of competing for an SEC title and making the College Football Playoff. These 2 schools have played in some memorable games over the past few seasons, and the matchup in Baton Rouge on October 25 figures to be another pivotal matchup.
