This year’s Sugar Bowl will have a different feel after Wednesday’s tragedy in New Orleans. Early reports stated 10 people were killed and dozens more injured when a truck plowed past barricades into a crowd of people on Bourbon Street.
Officials plan for the Sugar Bowl to be played as scheduled, with adjustments made to keep fans safe on Wednesday night. More parties involved in the game are releasing statements on Wednesday.
Georgia Athletics shared the good news that it has accounted for all members of the official travel party.
We are deeply saddened by the senseless violence that occurred in New Orleans,” Georgia’s statement reads. “All team personnel and members of the official team travel party have been accounted for. Currently, we are in contact with local law enforcement as well as representatives from the Sugar Bowl and College Football Playoff and are continuing to gather more information. Our prayers are with all those who traveled here for the Sugar Bowl and entire New Orleans community.
The SEC also released a statement from Commissioner Greg Sankey.
New Orleans is a special community that is hurting as we begin the New Year. Today’s tragedy in the French Quarter is a sobering event that reminds us that life is precious and each day is to be cherished,” Sankey said.
“Our prayers are with the families and everyone associated with those impacted by this senseless act of violence. We are grateful for those serving in law enforcement and public safety who responded immediately and continue to work for the safety of the community.
The Sugar Bowl matchup between No. 2 seed Georgia and 7-seed Notre Dame is scheduled for 8:45 p.m. ET.
