Georgia suffered a potentially huge loss for the 2027 season when 5-star cornerback Donte Wright decided to flip his verbal commitment from the Bulldogs to Miami.
On3’s Hayes Fawcett reported the recruiting world bombshell with a social media post late Saturday afternoon, with the ACC getting one over on the SEC for next fall. Wright also announced his decision to flip to Miami on social media on Saturday afternoon, leaving Georgia with a big hole to fill now in its 2027 cornerback recruiting haul.
Instead of playing for Kirby Smart and in the SEC next fall, the prize from Long Beach, Calif., changed his mind and will instead head to South Florida to play for Mario Cristobal and the Hurricanes. Wright is currently the No. 9 overall prospect in the Class of 2027, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.
He’s also the No. 2-rated cornerback in the class as of now and the top-ranked player from the talent-rich state of California, so this isn’t just any ordinary flip. Wright had been committed to Smart’s program in Athens for almost a year, but programs like Miami never went away and now Wright has rewarded the Canes for their persistence.
The Big Ten was also after Wright’s services, with Oregon and UCLA in the mix until Wright’s decision to flip to Miami on Saturday. The 6-foot, 175-pounder was swayed after a recent visit to Miami, as Cristobal flipped the longest-tenured player in Georgia’s 2027 recruiting class.
Wright’s flip gives Miami 11 commits in its 2027 recruiting class, which right now ranks 10th in the country, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.
Georgia’s loss was Miami’s gain for the 2027 season, but both the Bulldogs and Hurricanes will be trying to get back to the College Football Playoff in 2026. Here is what the Kalshi market is currently saying about both teams’ chances to have another shot at national title glory this fall (and winter):
