Greg McElroy started 27 games as the quarterback at Alabama in 2009 and 2010, and he understands the pressure and what it means to be the guy in Tuscaloosa. This off-season, the Crimson Tide had one of the most hotly-contested quarterback battles in all of college football.
Jalen Milroe is now off to the NFL, and Ty Simpson was in a battle with Keelon Russell and Austin Mack to see who would replace Milroe. Earlier this week, coach Kalen DeBoer announced that Simpson would be the guy starting against Florida State.
Simpson doesn’t have a ton of experience for the Crimson Tide, but there are some things that McElroy loves about him.
“What I love about watching this young man play is that he has a plan,” McElroy said on the latest episode of Always College Football. “Every single time the ball is snapped, he has a plan. That always hasn’t been the case at Alabama the last couple of seasons. I think he is a guy that is very underrated from a mobility standpoint. He can absolutely keep drives going with a scramble and hitting a guy down field. I think this is a great move by Alabama.”
Before this season, Simpson’s best game was when he helped the Crimson Tide overcome a 3-0 deficit at South Florida two years ago to get the win.
He will be back in the state of Florida for the opener, as the Crimson Tide will take on a Florida State team that is looking to bounce back from a brutal 2024 season. Kickoff will be at Doak Campbell Stadium on Aug. 30.
