Greg McElroy gives take on 2-man QB battle at Notre Dame
Greg McElroy isn’t about to predict who will win the starting quarterback job at Notre Dame because right now the ESPN college football analyst believes CJ Carr and Kenny Minchey are as close as possible.
During his Always College Football podcast on Tuesday, McElroy — who knows a little something about winning quarterback battles in college — gave his 2 cents on what’s going on during the fierce fall camp QB battle in South Bend. It’s a 2-man competition between Carr, a redshirt freshman who was once considered a prize recruit of the 2024 class, and Minchey, a redshirt sophomore who has had a unique path to Notre Dame.
“Coming into camp, I was under the impression it would probably be CJ Carr,” said McElroy.
But now, a few weeks into camp, the dynamic has apparently changed, according to McElroy.
“You listen to people who are really knowledgeable about Notre Dame, their program and what this battle is currently looking like, and it sounds like it’s 50-50. Where it could be Kenny Minchey one day and CJ Carr the other day,” said McElroy.
McElroy thought that Carr’s accuracy, ability to throw the ball down the field and just his general “gifted” ability as a thrower would give Carr the advantage.
But so far, Minchey appears to be holding his own in the competition.

In a few weeks, we’ll know who ultimately won out when Notre Dame travels south to Miami to take on the Hurricanes in a season-opening showdown on Aug. 31.
