The Alabama Crimson Tide easily could have lost on Saturday. Facing their first unranked opponent since Week 3 (Wisconsin), they trailed the South Carolina Gamecocks 22-14 with less than 3 minutes to go in regulation. Despite this, they prevailed 29-22 without even going to overtime.

Kalen DeBoer and Ty Simpson did a lot more than flirt with danger in Columbia. The Tide got about as hot and heavy with it as one could get. But they got out unscathed, and impressed ESPN analyst Greg McElroy — a 2009 Alabama national champion — with their ability to overcome adversity.

“Alabama weathered the ‘sandstorm’ and found a way to win. To trail by 8, late, and somehow find a way to escape in regulation… was pretty remarkable,” McElroy said on the Always College Football podcast.

McElroy mentioned teams “that trailed by 8 or more points with 3 minutes to go” were 2-293 this season entering Saturday’s action. He added that “everything in this game for Alabama was just a little bit off,” and that the Crimson Tide “were fortuitous” with their first quarter pick-six.

At the end of the day, wins are all that matters. Alabama may have been a little fortunate against South Carolina, but their players made the plays that needed to be made when things counted most. That’s what good teams do. The Crimson Tide will enjoy a well-earned bye this week before hosting Brian Kelly-less LSU in Week 11.
