Greg McElroy took a moment to reflect on Alabama’s 2024 campaign and the job that Kalen DeBoer did in Year 1 as the Tide’s head coach.
McElroy acknowledged the difficulty Alabama had in navigating the transfer portal last offseason after Nick Saban’s departure, but was critical of Alabama’s lack of consistency throughout the 2024 season.
“I think they were remarkably inconsistent from start to finish,” McElroy said. “It was just constantly a roller coaster and that is something that is going to be very important for the staff to try to iron out as they continue to move forward.
McElroy ultimately gave DeBoer a B- for his Year 1 performance. He specifically mentioned Alabama’s bowl game loss to Michigan as a reason for the lower grade:
“Had he won the bowl game against Michigan, I think it could have taken this grade to a different level,” McElroy said. “I also think you need to look at the penalties and you need to look at the amount of scrutiny that this team is naturally always going to receive. Overall, Year 1 grade for Kalen DeBoer, I’m giving him a B-minus.”
As McElroy mentioned, penalties were a huge issue for the Tide this season. They ranked tied for 113th nationally with 7.3 penalties per game.
Alabama will hope to have an improved season in 2025 under DeBoer.
